About Western Canada Marine Response Corporation

WCMRC is the only Transport Canada-certified marine response organization on Canada’s West Coast. On average, we respond to 20 spills each year. Our mandate is to ensure there is a state of preparedness in place when a marine spill occurs and to mitigate the impacts on B.C.’s coast. This includes the protection of wildlife, economic and environmental sensitivities, and the safety of both responders and the public.

About the Opportunity

WCMRC is looking for multiple full-time Marine Engineers based in Port Alberni, or Prince Rupert, B.C. Shifts are 10 hours per day, 4 days a week.

As the Marine Engineer, you will serve as the Chief Engineer to the vessel and master. Your primary responsibility will be to safely manage marine spill incidents, minimizing environmental impact through strategies such as containment, protection, recovery, and clean-up.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide safe, prompt, and efficient support for vessel operations, spill incidents, exercises, and preparedness
  • Maintain spill response equipment to ensure it is always operational and response-ready
  • Oversee all mechanical systems on the inspected vessel fleet
  • Participate in haul-outs, refits, and shipyard periods
  • Monitor all systems at sea, ensure performance to spec, and conduct repairs or mitigate damage
  • Ensure all activities prioritize personal safety and comply with company policies
  • Accountable to engineering management for technical performance and mentorship
  • Complete all assigned monthly work orders on time
  • Support vessel dry docking and assist with Transport Canada Vessel Inspections
  • Provide training to new hires, casuals, and contractors
  • Work on project teams, build committees, shipyard visits, and SME provision to committees
  • Maintain current certifications and proficiencies

About You

To qualify, you will need a 2nd/3rd/4th Class Marine Engineer certificate issued by Transport Canada, and a Class 5 driver's license

Additionally, the following skills and experiences will be highly valued:

  • 5+ years of experience in a related role
  • Experience with marine maintenance
  • Valid Seafarers Medical is required
  • Class 1 driver's license or Endorsement 20 (heavy trailer)
  • Experience working with a Safety Management System
  • Experience with vessel refit work in drydock
  • Maintenance of small power equipment
  • Ability to carry up to 22kgs on a regular basis
  • Ability to travel if needed (locally along B.C. coastline or internationally as part of the global response network) 
  • Working knowledge of local coastlines, and emergency response training and/or experience

  • $49.69 - 4th Class Marine Engineer
  • $51.51 - 3rd Class Marine Engineer
  • $52.56 - 2nd Class Marine Engineer

Training & Development

We help our employees stay sharp with mentorship, training and professional development programs. In addition to our ongoing Transport Canada-monitored tabletop and on-water exercises, our spill response team members receive equipment-specific training, response strategies training and cross-border training alongside our mutual aid partners in Alaska and Washington State.

WCMRC offers specialized training. Our health and safety training includes courses on first aid, confined-space entry and atmospheric testing, as well as certification courses in Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG). We also offer tuition reimbursements for team members who pursue applicable education or training outside the workplace.
